Piles Of Vine Prunings Need Removal

March 17th, 2010

Now that pruning of the North and South fields has been completed (save for the extra canes left as insurance against frost and tying down damage) and before we can move on to tying down phase, we need to remove the piles of canes left periodically up every row. Now what? Ideas range from using the pruning in special boilers, to shredding them to capture the nitrogen and potassium content and leaving them in the field. Some warn of the risk of infection if the prunings are not completely removed from the vineyard, so our reluctant decision is to load up the trailer and spend two full days collecting them for removal to a holding/burning area.
